Abstract

This study examines the relationship between security sector performance and public trust in democratic governance in Ogun State. In recent years, concerns over rising insecurity such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and communal tensions, have raised questions about the effectiveness of security institutions and their impact on citizens’ confidence in democratic processes in Nigeria. The study adopts an empirical qualitative approach, utilising in-depth interviews to generate primary data from residents, community leaders, civil society actors, and security personnel across selected local government areas in Ogun State. A total of 154 participants were purposively selected to capture diverse perspectives on the performance of agencies such as the Nigerian Police Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and and local security outfits. Data were analysed thematically, focusing on perceptions of responsiveness, accountability, professionalism, and human rights compliance. Findings reveal that while some respondents acknowledge improvements in rapid response and community policing initiatives, a significant proportion expressed low trust in security institutions due to allegations of corruption, delayed response to distress calls, and occasional abuse of power. These perceptions, in turn, negatively influence citizens’ willingness to engage in democratic activities, including voting and community participation. The study concludes that effective security sector performance is critical to strengthening democratic legitimacy at the sub-national level. It recommends enhanced accountability mechanisms, improved community–security relations, and sustained institutional reforms to rebuild public trust and support democratic consolidation in Ogun State.
